Hengaw; Wednesday, October 9, 2024

The death sentence of Mehdi Barahouei, a 21-year-old Baloch prisoner who had previously been sentenced to death on charges of "premeditated murder," was carried out in Zahedan Central Prison. He was 17 years old at the time of the crime.

According to a report received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, at dawn on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the death sentence of Mehdi Barahouei, a 21-year-old from Khash district in Sistan and Baluchestan, was carried out in Zahedan Prison.

As reported by the Haalvsh news outlet, this young prisoner was arrested in 2019 at the age of 17 on charges of premeditated murder during a group altercation, and was later sentenced to death by the judiciary.

It is worth noting that Mehdi Barahouei was initially sent to a juvenile correctional center after his arrest and was transferred to Zahedan Central Prison approximately two years later.

According to Hengaw's statistics, Mehdi Barahouei is the third juvenile offender to be executed in Iran’s prisons this year. The continued execution of juvenile offenders by the Islamic Republic of Iran occurs despite the fact that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child explicitly prohibits harsh or cruel punishments, including the capital punishment, for individuals under the age of 18.
