Kurdish woman in Mahabad arrested to serve prison sentence

Gelawej Mohammadi-Arshad, a Kurdish woman from Mahabad who was arrested in August 2024 and later sentenced to four months of imprisonment, has been arrested to serve her sentence and transferred to Urmia Central Prison.
According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Sunday, January 12, 2025, 45-year-old Gelawej Mohammadi-Arshad was arrested after being summoned to the Court of Execution of Sentences Branch in Mahabad. She has been transferred to the women’s ward of Urmia Central Prison to serve her four-month sentence.
Hengaw has learned that Mohammadi-Arshad was recently sentenced to four months of imprisonment by Branch 1 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Mahabad, presided over by Judge Sajjad Dosti, on charges of “propaganda against the state.”
On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Mohammadi-Arshad was arrested by intelligence forces while returning from work on Bagh-e-Shayegan Street in Mahabad. She was released 14 days later on temporary bail of 700 million tomans, pending the conclusion of legal proceedings.
