Karaj: Azhdar Piri, Kurdish researcher and editor of “Research of Nations” magazine, sentenced to prison

Azhdar Piri, a Kurdish researcher from Urmia and the editor-in-chief of the international magazine Research of Nations, has been sentenced by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to one year of imprisonment and additional penalties.

According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Azhdar Piri, 36, was recently sentenced by Branch 3 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Karaj to one year of imprisonment on charges of “propaganda against the state.”

A reliable source informed Hengaw that in addition to the one-year imprisonment, Piri has been sentenced to a two-year ban from engaging in online activities as a supplementary punishment.

On Monday, October 21, 2024, agents from the Intelligence Department raided Piri’s residence in Karaj and arrested him.

Hengaw previously reported that during the arrest, intelligence agents searched Piri’s home and confiscated electronic devices, including his mobile phone and laptop.

After 26 days in detention, Piri was temporarily released on November 15, 2024, on bail of 200 million tomans, pending the conclusion of legal proceedings.
