Kurdish man in Bukan arrested to serve prison sentence

Hemin Ebrahim Hamzeh, a 38-year-old Kurdish man from “Qare Gol” village near Bukan, has been arrested and transferred to Bukan Central Prison to serve a three-month prison sentence. He was initially arrested during last year’s Newroz celebrations.
According to reports received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Hamzeh was arrested on Thursday, January 23, 2025, to begin serving the sentence issued by Branch 101 of the Bukan Criminal Court 2.
On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, he was convicted on charges of “propaganda against the state” and sentenced to three months of imprisonment. The verdict was formally communicated to him on the same day.
Hamzeh’s initial arrest took place on May 9, 2024, when security forces raided his family home. His detention was linked to his participation in Newroz celebrations in Kurdistan. He was later released temporarily on bail while awaiting trial.
