Kurdish Lawyer Javad Alikordi arrested in Mashhad

Hengaw: Saturday, March 1, 2025
Javad Alikordi, a Kurdish lawyer residing in Mashhad, has been arrested by agents of Iran Intelligence Ministry and transferred to an undisclosed location. He is the brother of Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer who was recently released from prison after serving his sentence.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Saturday, March 1, 2025, Javad Alikordi was arrested at his law office in Mashhad during a raid conducted by intelligence agents.
As per published details, Javad Alikordi had recently refused to comply with an informal order from intelligence officers demanding that he report to the criminal enforcement office in Mashhad to serve his prison sentence. He had insisted that such a process must be carried out legally through a formal summons issued by the enforcement court.
In February of this year, the 37th Branch of the Khorasan Razavi Court of Appeals sentenced Javad Alikordi to 16 months in prison, a two-year ban on practicing law, and a two-year travel ban, after revoking a previous suspension of his sentence.
Previously, the Mashhad Revolutionary Court had convicted him on charges of "forming and leading a group with the intent to overthrow the regime, insulting Khamenei, and engaging in propaganda activities against the regime," sentencing him respectively to two years, eight months, and one year and five months in prison. However, the execution of this sentence had been suspended for three years.
Following the arrest of his brother, Khosrow Alikordi, Javad Alikordi took on the legal defense of several political prisoners, including Kamal Jafari Yazdi, Fatemeh Sepehri, and Hassan Baqerinia.
Khosrow Alikordi was released from Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad in February of this year after completing his prison sentence.
