Suspicious deaths of three prisoners in Baneh Prison within one-month period

Hengaw: Friday, April 25, 2025
Within a span of approximately one month—from mid-March to mid-April—three inmates, including two Kurdish prisoners and one from Hamedan, have died under suspicious circumstances in Baneh Prison.
According to reports received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Tuesday, April 7, 2025, Ali Sohrabi, a prisoner from Hamedan, died in Baneh Prison due to what has been officially described as “cardiac arrest.” A source familiar with the case stated that Sohrabi’s sudden death occurred just two days after his transfer to the prison.
Earlier, on Thursday, March 6, 2025, Farhad Ramazani, a father of one and a native of Baneh, also lost his life in the prison. His death was similarly reported as the result of cardiac arrest.
Prior to that, on Friday, February 28, 2025, another inmate, Kamal Mohammadpour, a father of three and also from Baneh, died under similar circumstances.
The official cause of death in all three cases has been listed as cardiac arrest. However, the close timing and repeated pattern of these deaths have raised serious concerns about the safety and conditions of inmates held in Baneh Prison.
Farhad Ramazani and Kamal Mohammadpour had been previously arrested and convicted on charges related to smuggling and drug offenses. No details have been released about the charges against Ali Sohrabi.
As of the time of this report, prison authorities and related institutions have not provided any explanation or public comment regarding the suspicious deaths of these three inmates.
