Kurdish political activist Bafrin Maroufi taken into custody to serve sentence

Bafrin Maroufi, a 44-year-old Kurdish political activist from the city of Bukan, has been arrested and transferred to prison to serve a sentence handed down on charges related to her political affiliations.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, Maroufi was taken into custody and transferred to the women’s ward of Urmia Central Prison to begin serving her sentence.

A source close to her family reported that Maroufi was sentenced to four months and seven days in prison by Branch 101 of the Bukan Criminal Court on charges of "collaborating with the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan."

Previously, on February 15, 2025, Maroufi had been temporarily released on bail after spending 16 days in pretrial detention at Urmia Central Prison, pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

Her initial arrest occurred on January 30, 2025, when security forces raided her home in Bukan without presenting an arrest warrant. She was subsequently transferred to the detention facility of the Intelligence Department in Urmia.
