Hengaw – Sunday, July 27, 2025

The death sentences of Behrouz Ehsani Eslamlou, arrested during the " Women, Life, Freedom" (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement, and Mehdi Hassani, another political prisoner, were carried out at Ghezel Hesar Prison at dawn on Sunday.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the executions were conducted in the early hours of July 27, 2025. Ehsani Eslamlou was 65 years old, while Hassani was 53.

Mizan News Agency, the judiciary’s official outlet, confirmed the executions but offered no details, merely alleging that the men’s activities were aimed at “disrupting social order and security.”

Over the past ten months, requests for retrial filed on behalf of both prisoners were rejected at least three times by Iran’s Supreme Court.

In September 2024, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced both men to death on multiple charges, including membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization, moharebeh (Waging war against the God), baghi (armed rebellion), efsad fel-arz (corruption on earth), gathering classified information, and conspiracy against national security.

Mehdi Hassani, a resident of Tehran, was arrested on September 9, 2022, while attempting to leave the country through Zanjan and was transferred to Evin Prison. Behrouz Ehsani Eslamlou, also from Tehran, was arrested at his home on November 28, 2022, during the Women, Life, Freedom protests and taken to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. He had previously been arrested in the fall of 2019 after attending the funeral of Pouya Bakhtiari, one of the victims of the November 2019 protests.
