Hengaw – Wednesday, September 3, 2025

Iranian authorities have sentenced 58 Kurdish people from the cities of Mahabad, Bukan, Piranshahr, and Oshnavieh (Shno) to three months in prison each for wearing traditional Kurdish clothing. Those convicted include relatives of individuals killed during the Woman, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jian, Azadi) movement.

Reports received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights indicate that the Revolutionary Court of Piranshahr issued the sentences as a substitute for fines of 24 million tomans per person.

The convictions were based on photographs showing the group wearing Kurdish dress and Jamaneh during a wedding ceremony. In March 2022, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the Jamaneh a symbol of Kurdish opposition parties and banned its use during Newroz celebrations.

Among those sentenced are Hassan Farastishad, Mohammad Daroftadeh, and Hassan Daroftadeh, relatives of Amir Farastishad and Komar Daroftadeh, who were killed during the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.
