Iranian authorities have imprisoned Kurdish civil activist Hamid Chapati from Urmia to serve a six-month sentence. He was taken into custody after being summoned to the Enforcement Branch of the Urmia Court and transferred to the city’s central prison.

According to information obtained by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Chapati, 37, had been sentenced last year by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court of Urmia, presided over by Judge Shahini, to three months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the government and disturbing public opinion.” In August 2025, following an appeal by Behzad Sarikhanlou, Deputy Prosecutor of Urmia, his sentence was increased to six months.

Chapati had previously been arrested on October 16, 2024, after being summoned to the Urmia Security Police. He was released on bail of six billion tomans pending trial.

During his initial arrest, security police forces raided his family home and conducted a search without presenting a judicial warrant.
