Three Arab Sunni religious activists, Hussein Sahagi, Jasem Loimi and Saleh Sorkhi, have been sentenced by Iranian authorities to a combined 34 years in prison and internal exile in Ahvaz. The three have reportedly faced ongoing pressure in recent years due to their religious activities.
According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Sahagi, Loimi and Sorkhi were convicted by Branch 2 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Kati, on charges of “membership in terrorist and takfiri groups.” The court issued a collective sentence of 40 years in prison and exile.
Under the verdict, Hussein Sahagi and Saleh Sorkhi were each sentenced to 12 years in prison and two years of internal exile, while Jasem Loimi received 10 years in prison and two years of internal exile.
The charges were reportedly based on images downloaded from social media, which were cited as evidence in the case.
