Young woman victim of child and forced marriage executed in Tabriz

Iranian authorities have executed a 24-year-old Turkish woman from Tabriz identified as Hanifeh Avandi, who was a victim of child marriage and forced marriage.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the execution was carried out at dawn on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Tabriz Central Prison.

Avandi had previously been sentenced to death under qisas, or retribution in kind, after being convicted of the intentional killing of her husband.

Sources told Hengaw that Avandi had been forced by her family to marry a disabled man at the age of 17.

She was accused of killing her husband five years ago after 11 months of marriage.

Informed sources said she suffered from severe psychological distress during her imprisonment and had been under medical supervision.

Iranian state media and judiciary-affiliated outlets had not announced the execution.
