Turkish man killed after Basij forces open fire on vehicle in Bonab

A Turkish individual from Malekan in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, identified as Ehsan Shirkhani, was killed after Basij forces opened fire on his vehicle in the city of Bonab.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the incident took place on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, when Shirkhani, a 35-year-old resident of Malekan, was fatally shot by Basij forces stationed at a checkpoint in Bonab.

An informed source told Hengaw that forces at the checkpoint opened fire on Shirkhani’s vehicle under the pretext that he had failed to obey an order to stop. He was struck by multiple bullets and died at the scene.

Sources stated that the Basij forces fired directly at the vehicle’s passenger compartment without following legal procedures governing the use of firearms and without issuing any warning shots beforehand.

Authorities and law enforcement officials in East Azerbaijan province have not provided any explanation regarding the shooting or the circumstances surrounding the killing.
