Hengaw – Thursday, June 25, 2026

Iranian authorities denied an Iraqi political prisoner timely emergency medical care after he suffered a heart attack in Evin Prison, causing his death.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Jabar Mostafa suffered severe heart attack symptoms on the evening of Monday, June 22, 2026, while being held in Hall 2 of Ward 7 at Evin Prison. He required immediate medical intervention and transfer to a specialized hospital outside the prison. However, officials at the prison infirmary and Evin Prison authorities deliberately delayed the emergency response and prevented his transfer to an outside medical facility, resulting in his death inside the prison compound.

Mostafa had previously been sentenced by the Iranian Judiciary to one year and six months' imprisonment on the charge of “propaganda against the state.” He had served approximately five months of his sentence in Ward 7 of Evin Prison.

The deliberate denial of prisoners' access to urgent, life-saving medical care constitutes torture and a clear violation of the right to life. Within Iran's judicial system, the systematic deprivation of medical care has increasingly been used as an additional tool to torture and physically eliminate political prisoners.
