Hengaw – Monday, June 29, 2026
Omid Faraghat, a journalist and political media activist based in Karaj, has been detained after responding to a security summons. A judicial authority subsequently placed him in pretrial detention and transferred him to prison.
According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Faraghat, who is known for his critical reporting, was arrested on June 29, 2026, after reporting to the Security Police in response to a telephone summons.
The Security Police had summoned Faraghat by phone the previous day, informed sources told Hengaw. After he appeared at the security agency, he was taken to the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office, where a judicial authority issued a pretrial detention order. He was subsequently transferred to prison.
The Iranian Judiciary has charged Faraghat over his journalistic work and critical writings with the fabricated charges of "disturbing public opinion" and "acting against national security."
Faraghat has previously faced judicial action because of his critical views. In November 2025, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to three months in prison. Branch 36 of the Tehran Province Court of Appeals later commuted the sentence to a fine of 20 million tomans in lieu of imprisonment.
