Italian journalist, Cecilia Sala arrested in Tehran

Cecilia Sala, a journalist working for the Italian newspapers Il Foglio and Cura Media, has been arrested by Iranian authorities in Tehran and reportedly transferred to solitary confinement in Evin Prison, according to Italian media.

Hengaw has learned that on Thursday, December 19, 2024, 29-year-old journalist and photographer Cecilia Sala was arrested in Tehran.

Italian media reports indicate that Sala has had two phone calls with her family since her arrest and met with the Italian Ambassador to Iran, Paola Amadi, on January 7 in prison.

Before her arrest, Sala interviewed a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), photographed women in Tehran defying mandatory hijab rules, and released a podcast featuring Zeinab Mousavi, a comedian arrested by Iranian security forces in November last year.

So far, no detailed information is available about the reasons for her arrest, the charges against her, or her current status.
