Teachers’ union activist Mehdi Fathi sentenced to 15 months in prison
Hengaw – Thursday, June 11, 2026
Mehdi Fathi, a board member of the Fars Province Teachers’ Trade Association, has been sentenced to an additional 15 months in prison in a new case brought against him by the Iranian Judiciary, despite currently serving the remainder of a previous sentence under electronic monitoring.
According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the Revolutionary Court in Shiraz recently issued and formally communicated the verdict to Fathi. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state.” The ruling was issued at the preliminary stage and is subject to appeal.
Prior to the verdict, Fathi had been summoned, formally charged, and temporarily released on bail.
Having already served two years of a five-year prison sentence, Fathi is currently completing the remainder of his sentence under house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor.
The new prosecution and prison sentence come amid a broader crackdown on teachers, labor activists, and civil society activists in Fars Province and across Iran following the events of January 8 and 9, 2026. The campaign has been marked by arrests, judicial prosecutions, and increased security pressure targeting activists across the country.
