Ribwar Marabi arrested to serve six-year prison sentence over January protests

Ribwar Marabi, a 26-year-old Kurdish man from Kamyaran arrested during the January 2026 protests in Tehran, has been detained to serve a six-year prison sentence after an appeals court reduced his original 10-year sentence to six years' imprisonment and a suspended four-year term.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Marabi was arrested on Saturday, July 25, 2026, after responding to a summons to an enforcement office in Tehran to begin serving his sentence. He was then transferred to Greater Tehran Penitentiary.

Marabi's original 10-year prison sentence, issued by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Mohammadreza Amouzad on the fabricated charge of "collaboration with Israel," was reduced on appeal to six years' imprisonment and a suspended four-year sentence.

Hengaw previously reported that security agencies and judicial authorities claimed Marabi had moved to Tehran to participate in the protests. In fact, he had lived and worked in the capital as a chef for several years before his arrest.

Marabi, a resident of Tehran originally from the village of Marab in Kamyaran County, was arrested on the evening of Friday, January 9, 2026, during the protests.
