Writer Roozbeh Gilasian sentenced to four years and eight months in prison

Branch 1 of the Bandar Abbas Revolutionary Court has sentenced Roozbeh Gilasian, a writer and researcher from Gorgan, the capital of Golestan Province, to a total of four years and eight months in prison.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the court sentenced Gilasian to eight months in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the state” and four years for “deviant educational or promotional activities deemed disruptive to the sacred principles of Islam.” The sentence was communicated to him on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Informed sources told Hengaw that the case cited his management of a Telegram channel with approximately 100 members, as well as the publication and circulation of his previously published works and books, as grounds for the charges.

The case was brought following a wave of arrests in Bandar Abbas after the 12-day Iran-Israel war. During this period, security agencies turned their attention to Gilasian’s writings and initiated judicial proceedings against him.

Gilasian had previously been arrested by security forces in Gorgan in August 2025 and was later temporarily released on bail.
