Kurdish Political Prisoner Adel Mokarram Goes on Hunger Strike

Hengaw: A political prisoner in Urmia central prison has gone on a hunger strike to protest authorities reluctance on his detention status.

According to the reports received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Sunday, October 4, 2020, Adel Mokarram, a political prisoner in Urmia central prison’s political ward, began a hunger strike to protest his 10-month detention without any judicial decision on his case.

Adel Mokarram, 30, was arrested by Turkish police forces last year in December and was deported to Iran. He spent 20 days in intelligent service detention center in Khoy, West Azarbaijan Province. After investigations, he was transferred to Khoy prison. Later on, he was transferred to Urmia prison. 

Despite having already served 10 months behind the bars, his case is still undecided.

Adel Mokarram went before the judiciary on September 3, 2020 in the 2nd branch of Urmia revolution court chaired by judge Sheykhlou. He was charged with membership in a Kurdish political party and illegally crossing borders.

Adel Mokarram previously was a member of the Democratic party of Kurdistan and he had fled to Turkey in 2019 to apply for asylum.
