Soheila Mohammadi, a Kurdish female political prisoner held in Urmia Central Prison, has resorted to a hunger strike by suturing her lips together as a protest against her detention conditions. Despite having served three years of her five-year sentence, she remains deprived of furlough and conditional release.
According to a report received by the Hengaw organization for Human Rights, on Saturday, August 5th, 2023, Soheila Mohammadi, a Kurdish female political prisoner from Salmas, sutured her lips in the women's ward of Urmia Central Prison as a demonstration of protest against the mistreatment by prison officials in Urmia.
An informed source revealed that Soheila Mohammadi took this action in response to the rejection of her request for furlough, conditional release, and the use of electronic monitoring by the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The source added, "The behavior of the Urmia Central Prison warden is to the extent that he even opposes Soheila Mohammadi's request for a meeting with the prosecutor."
Sehila Mohammadi, a mother of one child, attempted suicide February 2023 by inflicting stab wounds to her chest due to continuous pressures from the government security forces and their obstruction in granting her furlough or reduction, fortunately her life was saved by timely intervention from her fellow inmates.
It is worth noting that Soheila Mohammadi has been deprived of the right to furlough for the past three years, under continuous pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). She was detained in Salmas in the fall of 2020 by IRGC intelligence forces and was later transferred to the women's ward of Urmia Central Prison after several months of interrogation.
Soheila Mohammadi was later sentenced by Branch 1 of Urmia Revolutionary Court to five years of imprisonment on charges of membership in the Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK) and has been held in Urmia Central Prison for the past 3 years without rights to furlough.
