In February 2024, the death sentences of at least 10 prisoners were carried out in the prisons of the Islamic Republic of Iran, marking a 64% decrease compared to the previous month, which saw 74 executions.
Hengaw speculates that the slowdown in executions this month may be attributed to the commencement of the parliamentary election campaign in the Islamic Republic, with a potential for a resurgence after the elections.
Based on statistics compiled by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, at least 10 prisoners had their death sentences executed in Iranian prisons during February 2024, with identities confirmed for nine of them.
This report indicates that in February, the death sentences of at least 3 Turkish and 1 Kurdish prisoners were carried out. Additionally, one citizen each from Afghanistan and Iraq were executed in Iranian prisons.
Notably, last month witnessed the execution of a woman named Hajar Atabaki at Tabriz Central Prison.
The majority of executions occurred in Zanjan and Qazvin provinces, with two executions recorded in each province in February. Additionally, one execution was reported in the prisons of Urmia (West Azerbaijan), East Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Qom, Hamedan, and Isfahan provinces.
Out of the total 10 executed prisoners in February, only one case, accounting for 10% of the total, was officially announced by Iranian authorities and judiciary-affiliated websites.
