At Least 55 Prisoners Executed in Iranian Prisons in July 2024

In July 2024, at least 55 prisoners were executed in the prisons of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This number represents an inecrease of 44 cases, or 400%, compared to June, when 11 prisoners were executed.

According to data compiled by the Statistics and Documents Center of Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, at least 55 prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons during July 2024. While the identities of 49 of these prisoners have been confirmed to Hengaw.

According to the report, during July, at least 14 Turkish prisoners, 8 Baloch prisoners, 6 Kurdish prisoners, 3 Gilak prisoners, and 3 Lor prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons. Additionally, at least 7 Afghan citizens were executed last month.

In July, the death sentence of Kamran Sheikha, a Kurdish religious prisoner from Mahabad, was carried out in Urmia Central Prison. Furthermore, at least five women were executed: three in Birjand Prison, and one each in Shiraz and Khorramabad prisons.

Notably, only 2 of the 55 executions in July were announced by official Iranian media and judiciary-affiliated websites.
Additionally, the death sentences of eight prisoners were carried out secretly, without their families’ knowledge or the opportunity for a final meeting with their loved ones.


Classification by charges:

In July, the majority of executions were related to charges related to drug crimes, accounting for 33 cases, equivalent to 60% of all cases.

Separation of Execution of Death Sentences According to Provinces

Based on statistics from Hengaw, during the last month, the highest number of death sentences were carried out in the prisons of South Khorasan and Razavi Khorasan provinces, with 8 cases each. In the prisons of Fars province, 7 cases were registered, and 5 cases were recorded in Lorestan province.

   -   Fars province: 7 cases
- Lorestan province: 5 cases
- Alborz and East Azarbaijan provinces: 4 cases each
- Hormozgan province: 3 cases
- Kermanshah, Golestan, Zanjan, Qazvin, Sistan and Baluchestan, and West Azarbaijan (Urmia) provinces: 2 cases each
- Gilan, Mazandaran, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, and Qom provinces: 1 case each
