At Least 78 Prisoners Executed in Iranian Prisons in September 2024

In September 2024, at least 78 prisoners were executed across various prisons in the Islamic Republic of Iran, marking a 17% decrease from August, when 94 executions were recorded.
The Statistics and Documents Centre of Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, has confirmed the identities of 72 of the executed prisoners, while the identities of six others remain under investigation.
Among those executed, at least 13 were Baloch, 10 were Kurdish, 7 were Gilak, 6 were Turkish, and 6 were Lor prisoners. Additionally, 7 Afghan nationals were also among those executed.
One of the individuals executed was Mehdi Jahanpour, a Lor man from Firuzabad, Fars Province. He had been 16 years old at the time of the crime and was executed on September 16, 2024, at the age of 23, after serving seven years in prison. His execution was carried out without prior notification to his family.
Notably, out of the 78 executions conducted in September, only 2 (2.5%) were officially announced by Iranian authorities or judiciary-affiliated websites. Furthermore, 4 executions were carried out in secrecy, without notifying the families or allowing them a final visit. Two other prisoners were executed publicly in Khomein, Markazi Province.
Classification by charges:
In September, 50% of the executions were related to drug-related offenses. The charges were as follows:
• Premeditated murder: 37 cases
• Drug-related crimes: 39 cases
• Waging war against God (moharebeh) and premeditated murder: 2 cases
Separation of Execution of Death Sentences According to Provinces:
The highest number of executions occurred in Fars Province, with 24 executions. Seven executions were recorded in both Sistan and Baluchistan and Isfahan Provinces.

• Sistan and Baluchistan, Isfahan Provinces: 7 executions each
• Gilan, Alborz Provinces: 6 executions each
• Kerman Province: 5 executions
• Qazvin, East Azerbaijan Provinces: 3 executions each
• Kermanshah, West Azerbaijan (Urmia), Razavi Khorasan, Yazd, Hamedan, Markazi, and Golestan Provinces: 2 executions each
• Lorestan, Mazandaran, Hormozgan Provinces: 1 execution each
