At Least 87 Executions Carried Out in Iranian Prisons in January 2025

In the past month, at least 87 prisoners were executed in prisons across the Islamic Republic of Iran. This figure represents a 17.5% increase compared to January 2024, when 74 prisoners were executed.
The Statistics and Documents Centre of Hengaw Organization for Human Rights has confirmed the identities of 82 executed prisoners, while the identities of five others are still under investigation.
The executions in January included, at least 7 Kurdish prisoners, 10 Lor prisoners, and 4 Baloch prisoners. Additionally, at least 8 Afghan nationals were executed.
No executions of women or children under 18 were recorded last month.
Of the 87 prisoners executed, only three were officially reported in Iranian state-affiliated media or judiciary-related outlets. Additionally, six prisoners were executed secretly, without their families being informed or granted a final visit.
Classification by charges:
The majority of executions in January were for murder-related charges, accounting for 57.5% of the total cases:
• Premeditated murder (Qisas): 50 cases
• Drug-related offenses: 35 cases
• Rape: 2 cases
Separation of execution of death sentences according to provinces:
The highest number of executions took place in Alborz province, with 20 executions recorded. In total, executions were reported in 20 provinces, with Fars province having the second-highest number of executions.
• Alborz province: 20 executions
• Fars province: 14 executions
• Kermanshah and Hormozgan provinces: 6 executions each
• Razavi Khorasan province: 5 executions
• Isfahan province: 4 executions
• Yazd, Markazi, Lorestan, Golestan, and Zanjan provinces: 3 executions each
• West Azerbaijan (Urmia), Hamadan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Semnan, Khuzestan, and Bushehr provinces: 2 executions each
• Kurdistan (Sanandaj), Kerman, Qom, Gilan, and Mazandaran provinces: 1 execution each
