Two citizens from Qasr-e Shirin, named Mahdi Faghiri and Payman Shirbandi, were sentenced to 8 months of imprisonment and 50 lashes each by the city's criminal court in connection with the recent popular resistance and uprising.

According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the Iranian Criminal Court in Qasr-e Shirin sentenced Mahdi Faghiri and Payman Shirbandi to 8 months in prison and 50 lashes each on Sunday, January 29, 2023, for "disturbing public order and peace," "retaining people from business," and "damaging public property."

According to reliable sources, these two citizens' court hearings were held in absentia at Branch 101 Criminal Court in Qasr-e Shirin.

Mahdi Faghiri and Payman Shirbandi were denied access to a lawyer and other basic rights during the detention and proceedings.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's judicial system sentenced at least nine Kurdish activists arrested during the most recent popular resistance to a total of 564 lashes in January 2023, according to statistics recorded by the Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw Organization.
