Sohrab Rahmati, a prominent political activist and member of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region Bar Association, faced an assassination attempt in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Rahmati, who had been a target of threats from agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran, succumbed to the attack.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on the evening of Thursday, November 16, 2023, Rahmati was shot in front of his residence in the Hana City residential complex in Erbil by an armed individual or group. The assailants, wielding a Colt gun equipped with a silencer, fired two bullets into Rahmati's abdomen, resulting in serious injuries. The wounded lawyer, a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, is currently receiving medical treatment at a facility in Erbil.
It is noteworthy that Sohrab Rahmati has represented several families in recent years whose members were victims of assassinations orchestrated by agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Kurdistan Region. Notably, he played a key role in a case where the Islamic Republic of Iran was convicted for its involvement.
In a previous statement to Hengaw, Rahmati disclosed details of the assassination of Qader Qadri, a senior commander of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, attributing the orchestration to the Islamic Republic of Iran's Guards Corps. He further revealed that the defendants openly admitted Iran's significant financial offer in exchange for the assassination of Qader Qadri.
