Femicide: Young Woman Fatally Assaulted by Spouse in Urmia, Iran

In the early days of this spring, Samereh Mokhtarpour, a young woman hailing from Salmas and residing in Urmia (West Azerbaijan), fell victim to domestic violence, tragically losing her life at the hands of her husband. Her body was discovered along the Urmia-Mahabad road.

As per reports obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on March 31, 2024, at approximately 7 AM, 38-year-old Samereh Mokhtarpour, a resident of Urmia originally from Salmas, was fatally assaulted by her husband, with her body later found near the Mahabad road.

Earlier in April 2024, local sources reported the discovery of a woman’s body approximately 11 kilometers from Mahabad.

Informed sources revealed that Samereh Mokhtarpour, a law graduate and mother to a young daughter, had been enduring relentless physical and verbal abuse at the hands of her husband.

The perpetrator, identified as Bahman Meighani, confessed following his apprehension that during a heated argument, he first rendered the victim unconscious with repeated blows to her head and neck before ultimately strangling her with a shawl.
