The Death Sentence of a Prisoner Publicly Carried Out in Shahroud

The death sentence of a prisoner named Amir Reza Ajam Akrami who had previously been sentenced to public execution for the premeditated murder of a lawyer was carried out in the city of Shahroud, Semnan Province. This marks the first public execution in Iran in 2024.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, citing the Mizan website, the Iranian judiciary’s official website, at dawn on Monday, August 26, 2024, a prisoner, whose identity is still under investigation, was executed in public in the city of Shahroud.

The identity of this prisoner has been confirmed as 22-year-old Amir Reza Ajam Akrami for Hengaw. 

The defendant in this case shot and killed a lawyer named Mahmoud Reza Jafari Aghaei in August 2022, on one of the streets of Shahroud. He was later sentenced to public execution by the Second Branch of the Criminal Court of Semnan Province. 
It is worth noting that the 49th Branch of the Supreme Court upheld the sentence.

According to statistics recorded by the Hengaw’s Center for Statistics and Documentation Center, this is the first public execution in Iran in 2024. Last year, at least six prisoners were executed in public.
