Teachers' union activist, sentenced to four years in prison

Asghar Amirzadegan, a Qashqai Turkish teacher from Firouzabad, Fars Province, has been sentenced in absentia to a total of four years in prison in two separate cases by the Iranian judiciary.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, over the past week, Asghar Amirzadegan, a 54-year-old mathematics teacher from Firouzabad, was sentenced by Branch 101 of the Second Criminal Court of Firouzabad to two years in prison on charges of "insulting Khamenei and Khomeini" and one year in prison on charges of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Documents obtained by Hengaw indicate that in a separate case, Branch One of the Revolutionary Court of Firouzabad sentenced Amirzadegan to an additional one-year prison term on the charge of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

The charges against this teacher were reportedly based on the content of his mobile phone, including sent and received messages, as well as interviews with foreign media outlets.
