Hengaw — August 18, 2025

Former Kurdish political prisoner, Kianoush Cheraghi has been handed a new prison term and corporal punishment.

According to reports obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Kianoush Cheraghi, 45, a resident of Dehloran in Ilam Province, was sentenced by Branch 101 of the Dehloran Criminal Court to 13 months and 16 days in prison for “spreading false information online” and 40 lashes for “insulting officials while on duty.”

Cheraghi, who has a history of repeated arrests by Iranian security forces, was previously convicted by a Revolutionary Court on charges of “acting against national security” and served 14 months of a two-year sentence before being released in May 2025 following a partial suspension of his term.

He was first detained in September 2023 after posting a video on Instagram marking the first anniversary of the death of Jina Amini, whose killing in police custody sparked nationwide protests. Most recently, on June 24, 2025, Cheraghi and his wife, Akram Sabzi, were detained during a raid by intelligence agents in Dehloran.
