Hengaw: Monday, April 21, 2025
Mamosta Luqman Amini, the Friday prayer leader of “Chahar Yaran-e-Nabi” Grand Mosque in Sanandaj, was arrested after appearing at the Special Clerical Court in Hamedan. A prominent religious figure, Amini had previously been arrested during the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Women, Life, Freedom) movement and sentenced to prison and exile.
According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Monday, April 21, 2025, Mamosta Luqman Amini, a well-known Kurdish cleric from Sanandaj, was detained after responding to a court summons from the Special Clerical Court in Hamedan.
He has since been transferred to an undisclosed location, and the specific reasons for his latest arrest remain unknown.
Previously, Amini had been sentenced by the same court to five years in prison for “possessing a handgun,” one year for “propaganda against the state in favor of Kurdish parties,” and another five years for “inciting unrest and supporting protesters.”
In accordance with Iran’s cumulative sentencing laws, the most severe of the sentences—five years in prison—will be enforced.
In addition to the prison sentence, Mamosta Amini was permanently defrocked, banned for life from delivering sermons, and sentenced to two years of internal exile in Ardabil as part of his punishment.
Mamosta Luqman Amini was initially arrested by government forces on Tuesday, January 30, 2023, on the Sanandaj–Marivan road. He was temporarily released on bail on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, pending the outcome of judicial proceedings.
