Six Kurds sentenced to eighteen months and six days in prison

Six Kurds from the city of Miandoab (Mianduwaw) have been sentenced by the Iranian judiciary to a total of eighteen months and six days in prison. Those convicted are Behzad Barjasteh, Keywan Barjasteh, Shahab Tawan, Khaligh Rahimi, Nima Qorbanzadeh, and Sediq Abbasnejad.
According to information obtained by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 101 of the Miandoab Criminal Court (Second Division) sentenced each of the six men to three months and one day in prison on charges of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Abbasnejad, a father of three from the village of Qala Holakukhan; Behzad Barjasteh, 32; Keywan Barjasteh; and Qorbanzadeh, 28, all from the village of Ebrahimabad; as well as Rahimi, a father of three, and Majidzadeh, 28, both from the village of Gamish Guli, were among those convicted.
The charges were reportedly based on their participation in “the funeral of an individual killed by the Islamic Republic” and “contact and communication with a political activist abroad.” They were arrested by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence on the evening of February 22, 2025, at their homes and were released from Urmia Prison one month later upon posting bail of 1.5 billion tomans, pending the conclusion of judicial proceedings.
