Over three months in detention, protest detainee remains in legal limbo
Hengaw – Tuesday, April 21, 2026
Amir Mohammad Mojallal Chouberi, a 22-year-old man arrested during protests earlier this year in Tehran, remains in legal limbo more than three months after his detention. He is currently being held in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.
Based on information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, he is being held in Hall 35, Unit 3 (Tarbiat Ward) of Qezel Hesar Prison under poor conditions, while judicial authorities have yet to determine his legal status. He has now been detained for 109 days.
Informed sources state that he was arrested on January 2, 2026, during protest gatherings in Tehran by government forces. After undergoing interrogation, he was transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison. He has no prior record of arrest or political activity and comes from a working-class family.
Security and judicial bodies of the Islamic Republic of Iran have brought several serious charges against him, including:
- Assembly and collusion with intent to commit crimes against national security
- Disrupting public order and peace through participation in protests
- Attempted intentional murder by allegedly trying to run over security forces
- Disobeying government agents
Despite nearly four months having passed since his arrest and the completion of the investigative phase, no verdict has been issued. His continued detention in a state of legal limbo has raised serious concerns for his family.
