Mohsen Sazegar and Reza Kamalvand serving prison terms over January protests

Mohsen Sazegar and Reza Kamalvand, two residents of Esfarayen in North Khorasan Province who were arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests, are serving their sentences in Esfarayen Central Prison.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Sazegar and Kamalvand, an Arabic-language teacher at schools in Esfarayen, are currently incarcerated in the city’s Central Prison.

Sazegar was sentenced by the Esfarayen Revolutionary Court to one year in prison on charges of “inciting and provoking people to wage war and kill one another” and “disrupting public order and national security.” The sentence was upheld in full on appeal.

He was transferred to prison on July 22, 2026, to begin serving his one-year sentence.

Sazegar had been arrested on February 3, 2026, when Iranian forces raided his home and subjected him to physical violence. He was released three weeks later on bail of eight billion tomans.

Kamalvand was sentenced by the Bojnurd Revolutionary Court to five years in prison and a two-year suspension from employment. His request to serve the remainder of his sentence outside prison under electronic monitoring was rejected.

Kamalvand was arrested by Iranian forces at his workplace on February 16, 2026.
