Nozhat Mirrazi,mother of slain protesters Ali and Emad Shoush, arrested in Lahijan

Nozhat Mirrazi, known as “Mama Nozhat,” a Gilak woman whose two sons, Ali Shoush and Emad Shoush, were killed during protests in Iran, has been arrested by Iranian security forces in Lahijan, Gilan province.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mirrazi, a resident of Lahijan, was arrested by Iranian security forces on September 4, 2026, and transferred to an undisclosed location. Her two sons were killed during the 2022 and 2026 protest movements.

Sources familiar with the case said Mirrazi’s arrest came one day after she published a video marking the approaching birthday of her slain son, Emad Shoush.

Her arrest also comes amid heightened security pressure in Gilan province and efforts by intelligence and law enforcement forces to prevent a gathering at the grave of Houman Sabbagh in Lahijan to mark his birthday.

Ali Shoush, a poet, theater actor and musician from Lahijan, was killed by Iranian security forces in Isfahan during the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement.

His brother, Emad Shoush, was an active member of Iran’s families seeking accountability for relatives killed during protests and had previously been arrested during the 2022 movement. He was killed during the January 2026 protests in Lahijan on January 8, after Iranian security forces opened fire, striking him with four bullets.

No clear information is available regarding the agency responsible for Mirrazi’s arrest, her place of detention or the charges against her.
