Hengaw – Wednesday, June 3, 2026
The Iranian judiciary has sentenced Maryam Babajani, who was arrested during the January protests, to 32 years, six months, and two days in prison. Under Iran’s sentencing laws, 20 years of the sentence are enforceable.
According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch One of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court recently sentenced Babajani to a total of 32 years, six months, and two days in prison.
Under the ruling, Babajani received 20 years and one day in prison on one security-related charge and an additional 12 years, six months, and one day on another, bringing her total sentence to 32 years, six months, and two days. The verdict also invokes provisions of Iran’s law on intensified punishment for espionage-related offenses.
Following the issuance of the sentence, Babajani’s lawyer, Hossein-Ali Khatami, filed an appeal challenging the ruling.
Babajani was arrested in Izeh in late January 2026 during the January protests. She was later released from prison after posting bail of 10 billion tomans while her case remained under judicial review.
