19-year-old Narges Torbati remains detained without charge in Mashhad
Hengaw – Saturday, June 6, 2026
More than three weeks after her arrest, Narges Torbati, a 19-year-old resident of Mashhad, remains in legal limbo in the “Aramesh” ward of Vakilabad Prison. Judicial authorities have so far refused to grant her temporary release on bail.
According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Torbati was arrested on Friday, May 15, 2026, at a security checkpoint in Mashhad by Iranian government forces.
Sources told Hengaw that security agents searched her mobile phone and subsequently detained her on the grounds that she followed several foreign-based media outlets on social media platforms.
More than three weeks after her arrest, Torbati continues to be held in the Aramesh ward of Vakilabad Prison without any clear judicial determination regarding her case, while authorities have declined to approve bail for her temporary release.
Iranian security agencies and judicial authorities in Mashhad have not publicly disclosed any formal charges against the 19-year-old detainee.
