Kurdish prisoner Mozhgan Kavosi goes on hunger strike

Hengaw: The Kurdish political prisoner Mozhgan Kavosi, imprisoned in Evin Prison in Tehran, has started a hunger strike.

According to the report received by Hengaw Human Rights Organization, the Kurdish political prisoner Mozhgan Kavosi , who is serving her prison sentence in Evin Prison in Tehran, has been on hunger strike since September 1, 2020.

According to an informed source, the prisoner went on a hunger strike because she was denied prison leave and unable to contact her family. The Kurdish citizen and writer Mozhgan Kavosi, who lives in Kelardasht, Mazandaran Province, was arrested on November 18, 2019 by security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran after a house search. After a month, she was released on bail of 100 million tomans.

In December 2019, Mozhgan Kavosi was sentenced to a total of 69 months in prison by the Nouschahr court. In March 2020, the verdict was extended to 76 months and 15 days. The court sentenced her to 33 months imprisonment on charges of "membership of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan", 36 months in prison on charges of "agitation and disturbance of public order and security" and to seven months and 15 days because of „propaganda against the state".

According to Article 134 of the Islamic Law, a convicted person who has been sentenced to several sentences in various cases must serve the longest sentence, which in Mozhgan Kavosi s case would be 36 months.

The Kurdish citizen was arrested by security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran on May 19, 2020 and transferred to the prison in Nouschahr, Mazandaran Province, to begin her sentence. About a month later, on June 22, 2020, the Kurdish prisoner was transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran, where she has been until now.
