Sirous Abbasi and his brother Azad Abbasi, Kurdish language teachers, have been arrested after being summoned and referred to the Iranian Judiciary. These Kurdish civil and cultural activists were arrested and sentenced to prison in Dehgolan last year during the Jin, Jiyan, and Azadi movement.
According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, Sirous Abbasi, a Kurdish civil and cultural activist, and Azad Abbasi, a civil activist and Kurdish language teacher, were arrested after being summoned by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court in Dehgolan.
Sirous Abbasi's wife, Farideh Veisi, published a post on her Instagram account and wrote that these two cultural activists were arrested and taken to prison because of what she called "not retreating from their previous positions, work, and activities".
The arrest of Sirous and Azad Abbasi was followed by the cancellation of the Roznobar Zanset Kurdistan Institute’s permission by the Islamic Republic of Education and Culture. This cultural and educational institute was founded by Sirous Abbasi and Farideh Veisi in 2017.
Sirous Abbasi and his wife, Farideh Veisi, former political prisoners, as the founders of this institution, announced in a video message: "We consider such an action to be baseless, illegal, and unjust."
Sirous and Azad Abbasi were arrested during the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi movement on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, and after spending 32 days in solitary confinement, they were transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison. After being released on bail, they were sentenced by the Dehgolan Criminal Court to 10 months imprisonment for “propaganda against the regime”, 18 months for "disturbing public order" and 48 months for"gathering and collusion against national security".
