Hengaw Thematic Report: A Report on the Brutal Crackdown on Teachers and Students in Iran

The Hengaw Statistics and Documents Centre has recorded that, in less than nine months since the beginning of 2023, security forces in various Iranian cities have arrested at least 110 children and students and 43 teachers and educators. Moreover, judicial authorities have imposed flogging and imprisonment sentences on 17 teachers and 5 students.
Hengaw’s investigations reveal that, during this period, Iranian intelligence and security forces have arrested at least 110 students, whose identities have been verified by Hengaw, in different cities of Iran.
Out of the 110 arrested children and adolescents, 47 were Kurds and 47 were Balochs, accounting for more than 85% of the cases involving children and adolescents in Iran. Additionally, 16 other children and adolescents have been arrested in other regions of Iran, with Karaj having the highest number of arrests with 6 cases.
Among the detainees, 16 were girls and 94 were boys, all under 18 years of age, which classifies them as children. Furthermore, 12 detainees belonged to families that had lost a member during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement.
According to these investigations, at least 47 teachers and educators in various Iranian cities have been arrested; 26 of the detainees (55%) were Kurdish teachers working in schools in different parts of Kurdistan. In the mentioned nine-month period, judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran have collectively sentenced at least 5 children and adolescents under the age of 18 to a total of 9 years and 5 months in prison and 148 lashes. All of these individuals were from various cities in Kurdistan.
The Hengaw legal team has confirmed that, in most of the cases, the students and teachers’ right to due process has been violated and they have not had access to a lawyer. In some cases, the students and teachers have been tortured and subjected to inhuman conditions under the control of the Iranian intelligence and security forces.
The following is a list of the names and sentences of the five children under 18 who have been subjected to flogging and imprisonment by the Iranian judiciary:
1. Kourosh Garavand, 17, from Sarableh, sentenced to 7 months of disciplinary imprisonment.
2. Arshia Barzin, 17, from Javanroud, sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment and 74 lashes.
3. Kianoush A’zami, 17, from Javanroud, sentenced to 10 months of imprisonment and 74 lashes.
4. Fakhraddin Ebrahimi, 17, from Oshnavieh (Shono), sentenced to 1 year of disciplinary imprisonment and 2 years of suspended imprisonment.
5. Farhad Navayi, 16, from Mahabad, sentenced to 2 years of disciplinary imprisonment.
The following is a list of the names and sentences of the 17 teachers and educators who have been subjected to flogging and imprisonment by the Iranian judiciary:
1. Mehdi Dastani from Yazd, sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment and 74 lashes.
2. Salah Azadi from Marivan, sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment.
3. Shaban Mohammadi from MariwAan, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
4. Sorour Mollaei from Sanandaj, sentenced to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
5. Ahmad Alizadeh from Abadan, sentenced to 6 years, 7 months, and 17 days of imprisonment.
6. Mojgan Bagheri from Shiraz, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
7. Zahra Esfandiyari from Shiraz, sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment.
8. Abdolrazzaq Amiri from Shiraz, sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment.
9. Asghar Amirzadegan from Shiraz, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
10. Gholamreza Gholami from Shiraz, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
11. Afshin Razmjouyi from Shiraz, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
12. Iraj Rahnama from Shiraz, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
13. Mohammad Ali Razmkesh from Shiraz, sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
14. Sara Siahpour from Tehran, sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment.
15. Hamid Jafari Nasrabadi from Kashan, sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment.
16. Soleiman Abdi from Saqqez, sentenced to 16 months of imprisonment and 70 lashes.
17. Tahereh Naghi from Tehran, sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment.
