In September 2023, a minimum of 27 prisoners faced execution within Iranian prisons, representing a significant decrease of 47 cases, equivalent to a 63% reduction compared to August, when 74 individuals received death sentences.
Based on data documented by the Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, during September 2023, at least 27 prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons. Among these cases, 17 were related to individuals serving sentences for murder, forming the majority.
Additionally, in September, a minimum of six Baloch prisoners were executed in Mashhad and Zahedan prisons, accounting for 22% of all executions carried out during that month.
Notably, during August, at least two women were executed in Varamin and Mashhad prisons. Furthermore, two prisoners, Abolfazl Bayat from Robat Karim and Ali Najafi from Kuhdasht, who were executed in Karaj and Khorramabad prisons, may have been under 18 years old at the time of their crimes. Hengaw is currently investigating this issue.
Shiraz Central Prison reported the highest number of executions during this period, with 4 cases. Additionally, there were 3 cases each recorded in Khorramabad, Zahedan, Mashhad, Birjand, and Ghezel Hesar prisons in Karaj. Furthermore, two cases each were documented in Minab and Tabriz prisons. Lastly, a single death sentence was carried out in Qom, Borujerd, Ahvaz, and Isfahan prisons.
