The death sentence of Hamidreza Azari, a 17-year-old convicted of murder, was carried out at Sabzevar Central Prison. The execution followed his arrest and subsequent sentencing.
According to reports obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Hamidreza Azari, a juvenile offender from Sabzevar, faced execution in the early hours of Friday, November 24, 2023, at the city's central prison.
Documentation provided to Hengaw revealed that Hamidreza Azari was 16 years, 8 months, and 18 days old at the time of the crime and 17 years, 3 months, and 14 days old at the time of execution.
In the same regard, the Tasnim News Agency, linked to the IRGC, reported that "on May 11, 2023, an inmate, in a conflict over "honor" (Namus), killed Hamidreza Al-Daghi," refraining from revealing details about the age or identity of the implicated juvenile offender.
Following Hengaw's investigation, it was found that Hamidreza Azari, as the primary defendant, received a death sentence from the judge at the Sabzevar Criminal Court branch. Another prisoner, Abolfazl Sarposhi, identified as the second defendant, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The execution of juvenile offenders constitutes a clear violation of human rights, contravening the fundamental principles outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international standards. Every child is entitled to legal protection and a fair judicial process, and imposing severe penalties, such as the death penalty, is inconsistent with these principles.
