Hengaw has obtained information indicating that the Islamic Republic of Iran intends to present some of its military casualties as elites, athletes, or cultural figures. Hengaw calls on human rights organizations, Iranian civil society, and Persian-language media abroad to refrain from uncritical repetition of state media claims regarding civilian casualty statistics.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights condemns the killing of civilians and the intensifying military confrontation between Iran and Israel. Hengaw calls on the international community not to overlook the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran amid the news of this war.
Escalated repression and executions of political prisoners during wartime in Iran have a historical precedent. So too does retaliation against political opposition groups, Kurdish political parties, women opposing Iran’s misogynistic policies, and the massacre of ethnic and national minorities during war, as occurred in the 1980s during the Iran-Iraq war.
According to Hengaw’s statistics, in the past 30 months (2.5 years), at least 12 prisoners have been executed in Iran on charges of “collaboration with / espionage for” Israel.
