Incendiary war devices discovered after forest fires in Marivan - Hengaw

Hengaw – Thursday, September 18, 2025
Environmental activists have discovered remnants of incendiary objects resembling explosives in the Surin mountain range of Marivan after recent forest fires. The devices are believed to have triggered the blaze.
According to reports obtained by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, environmental activists and local volunteers working to contain the fire near the villages of Kani Kewe and Piranekon found fragments and casings with incendiary properties after the flames were extinguished.
A knowledgeable source told Hengaw that the objects were fitted with wires and could ignite or explode on contact with other materials. Evidence and photographs suggest they were designed for military purposes, commonly used as illumination or defensive tools, and capable of producing intense heat that can rapidly cause large-scale wildfires in natural areas.
The wildfire began on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in the Surin mountain range, destroying extensive areas of meadows and forest. It caused significant environmental damage but was eventually contained through the efforts of environmental activists and local volunteers.
Hengaw noted that in recent years, bombardments by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other military activity in Kurdistan’s border areas have repeatedly inflicted serious damage on forests and natural resources. Several environmental activists have also lost their lives while trying to extinguish fires and protect nature.
