Execution of a Couple in Zanjan Prison, Iran

The death sentence of a young couple, identified as Ismail Hassaniani and Marjan Hajizadeh from Shahin Dej, who were previously sentenced to death for drug-related charges in a joint case, was carried out in Zanjan Central Prison.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, at dawn on Thursday, April 11, 2024, the death sentences of the couple, aged 29 and 19, respectively, were executed in Zanjan Central Prison.

According to knowledgeable sources, this couple, Turkish individuals from Shahin Dej and residents of Zanjan, were arrested approximately three years ago on charges of narcotics possession and were subsequently sentenced to death by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran.


The Iran Human Rights Organization reports that Marjan Hajizadeh was 16 years and four months old at the time of her arrest and was also a victim of child marriage. However, the organization has not been able to obtain a document confirming Marjan Hajizadeh’s status as a juvenile offender.

As of the time of compelling this report, the news of the couple’s execution has not been announced in government media, particularly those affiliated with the judicial system of the Islamic Republic.
