Hengaw: Thursday, May 2, 2024

Last week, the death sentence of Soraya Mohammadi, a female prisoner from Pakdasht, Tehran province, was carried out at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. Hengaw is reporting this development for the first time today, eight days after the event.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Soraya Mohammadi was executed in the early morning of Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Ghezel Hesar Prison. She had been imprisoned at Qarchak Varamin prison for two years on charges of premeditated murder before being transferred to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj for execution.

A source close to the prisoner's family revealed that Soraya Mohammadi had been convicted of murdering her sister-in-law's landlord two years prior, allegedly motivated by theft, and had been incarcerated since then.

Notably, state media had previously reported the execution of a woman named "Shahnaz" last week. Hengaw has learned that Shahnaz was also an inmate at Qarchak Varamin prison, but her execution was halted at the last minute. She was subsequently returned to Qarchak prison after the victim's family agreed to forgive her in exchange for blood money.
