Report: Five prisoners executed in Mashhad and Sari

Earlier this week, the death sentences of four prisoners, including an Afghan national, were carried out in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad for drug-related charges. The identities of two of these prisoners, Yaser Ghafourian and Mohammad Hoshiar Alizadeh, have been confirmed. Additionally, another prisoner, Habib Shojaei, was executed in Sari.

According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, at dawn on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at least four prisoners were executed for drug-related charges in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad. The identities of two of these prisoners, both from Mashhad, have been confirmed as 47-year-old Mohammad Hoshiar Alizadeh and Yaser Ghafourian.

The identities of the two other prisoners, one from Qochan in Razavi-Khorasan province and the other an Afghan citizen, are being investigated by Hengaw. These four prisoners had been arrested and sentenced to death five years ago.
At the same time, the death sentence of 40-year-old Habib Shojaei from Sari was carried out in the central prison of Sari. He was arrested three years ago on charges of murder and subsequently sentenced to death by the Iranian Judiciary. To date, the executions of these five prisoners have not been reported by Iranian state media, including outlets affiliated with the judiciary.
