Hengaw: Tuesday, March 4, 2025

Mahmoud Naderi, a Kurdish resident of Kalatrazan district, Sanandaj, has been arrested by the Intelligence Department following repeated summonses and threats over the widespread use of “Jamaneh” and “Khaki Clothing” at his son’s wedding ceremony.

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Mahmoud Naderi, 45, from Daaneh Kamangar (Dadaaneh Kamangar) village, was arrested after reporting to the Intelligence Department of Sanandaj following a summons via phone call the previous day. He appeared at the security agency at 8:00 AM and was subsequently detained.

A source close to the Naderi family stated that his arrest is linked to the wedding ceremony of his son, which took place at Mehr Hall in Sanandaj. Many attendees had worn “Jamaneh” and “Khaki Clothing” in a gesture of solidarity with 58 people in Piranshahr who had previously faced legal action for wearing similar attire.

Hengaw has learned that over the past month, Mahmoud Naderi had been repeatedly summoned by the Intelligence Department. Additionally, his mobile phone was confiscated by security forces the day after the wedding and was only returned five days ago.

Previously, Hengaw had reported that the Intelligence Department of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been exerting pressure on event halls and venues across cities in Kurdistan, warning them against allowing people wearing “Jamaneh” and “Khaki Clothing” at ceremonies.

Sources in Sanandaj have reported that in the past month, one event hall was sealed for three weeks and another for two weeks. Venue managers were threatened with extended closures if they continued to host events where attendees wore these symbols.

In early December 2024, at least 58 Kurdish people in Mahabad, Bukan, and Piranshahr—including family members of those killed in the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement—were summoned to judicial authorities for “symbolism” after wearing “Jamaneh” and “Khaki Clothing” at a wedding ceremony.

Following these summonses and legal actions, videos from wedding ceremonies in Sanandaj, Bukan, Mahabad, Piranshahr, and Oshnavieh have surfaced in recent weeks, showing attendees deliberately wearing “Jamaneh” and “Khaki Clothing” as an act of solidarity.

“Jamaneh” is a traditional Kurdish vest, often worn as part of the regional attire, symbolizing Kurdish cultural identity. “Khaki Clothing” refers to the outfits historically associated with Kurdish movements and resistance. In recent years, wearing these garments at public gatherings has been perceived as a political statement, leading to pressure from Iranian authorities.
