Hengaw – Thursday, May 29, 2025

Karo Alidad, a civil and environmental activist from the city of Marivan, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the Revolutionary Court in Marivan sentenced 21-year-old Alidad to 18 months of discretionary imprisonment on charges of “propaganda against the state.”

He was violently arrested on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, during a raid by intelligence agents at his workplace in Marivan. His arrest was linked to his participation in the February 3rd general strike protesting the death sentences issued for political prisoners Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi.

Alidad was temporarily released on Saturday, March 1, 2025, after 38 days in detention at the Intelligence Detention Center and Sanandaj Central Prison (Sna), upon posting bail set at 800 million tomans.

It is worth noting that Alidad previously suffered a spinal injury while volunteering to extinguish wildfires in the Marivan region. He had also been arrested by intelligence forces once before, in January 2021.
